The IFA National Convention is the premier educational and networking event in franchising. Their 2007 Convention in Las Vegas was a huge success with over 3,100 attendees. SEO/SEM Lead Generation Marketing Strategy

In just about every conversation I have with customers and colleagues these days, the most prevalent topics are Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Lead Generation. The reality is that there is so much confusion and misinformation in the industry these days, that most companies and marketers really have no clue what to do or know what really works.

The reality is that SEO/SEM and Lead Generation have to been done in concert and don’t really do much good in isolation. To run an effective marketing strategy that encompasses these methods, companies must create an integrated program that systematically measures effectiveness. In addition to a well crafted strategy that utilizes these tools correctly, companies must have CRM and CEM programs in place that manage leads and drive closed sales. Over the next few posts in this blog, I plan to explain how an effective strategy can be achieved by any company. One thing is for sure, if any marketer believes that running a thirty-day test with google ad-words and playing with meta-tags will suffice as a SEO/SEM strategy, then the reality is that the money spent on these efforts would be better invested in a bank savings account since some return on investment is better than none.

Rule Number 1: SEO/SEM is a managed long term process that requires discipline and commitment. If this one rule is followed the chances of success are likely. Statistical data for successful programs that I have personally evaluated almost always take at least 4-6 months to see real results.

Websites - Nobody’s Reading The Text!

I do a fair amount of website research. The one major blunder I see in the majority of the websites that I visit is the large amount of text throughout the sites. It’s like whoever can tell their story using the most words wins (but in reality they lose).

I have one thing to say…Stop It! No one is reading your long, boring, confusing stories about who you are, what you do, how long you’ve been doing it, blah, blah, blah. And no it isn’t a good SEM/SEO strategy either.

Viewers today are looking for simple, direct, short messages that quickly convey credible and compelling messages about your products and services. That’s why web-based video with motion graphics (done right) are proving to be very successful in drawing viewers into your site and driving them to take action.

Marketing - How Fast Can You Move?

Recently, a Public Relations guru asked me, “How do you see the marketing industry evolving over the next decade?” “Who knows,” was my response. Ten years is a long time. When I worked at a Fortune 500 company, we made a decision in the early nineties to focus on a three year planning model because our consumers, customers and competitors were changing too fast to spend any time trying to plan beyond a three year window. In reality, what we planned three years out rarely came close to what we actually did three years later.

That said, I do think marketers and agencies will need to be even more nimble and responsive to change. We simply don’t have the time to create and deliver brand and marketing solutions in a 12-18 month window. Our creative windows are getting smaller and smaller.

At InovaOne, the creative cycles for our clients average 90 to 120 days. This includes conducting market assessments, refreshing or developing a brand identity, creating the artwork and messaging, developing the technical landscape such as websites, HTML emails, web-based video with integrated motion graphics, etc. and getting the collateral into the marketplace. This isn’t the norm in bigger, slower agencies. However, this is what clients need in today’s fast paced, technologically savvy marketplace. We simply have to get real business results through marketing on a faster time line, at a higher level of creativity and through technology centric solutions.
